Kanechi: My name is Clevance Mbilinyi, and I also go by Kanechi which is my preferred self given name. Funny story actually, I once met a black South African at Yale university in 2018 who had a Xhosa name through and through. He inquired about my name, which I told him - "Clevance Mbilinyi". He was immediately so confused as he could not wrap his head around an African having a white name. So he asked if I had an African (Bantu) name, which I did not. He later on started addressing me as Mr. Mbilinyi, refusing to call me by my white name. This was not too big of a deal to me, but it really haunted me for long that I had to research it and ended up going with my great grandfather's name the great KANECHI.
